Session 1: Dyslexia in Context: A Cognitive Model of Reading Difficulty - Wednesday 2nd September 2026 @ 7 pm
Understand the cognitive foundations of reading and dyslexia
Participants will be able to explain how reading works as a cognitive process (e.g., word recognition, language, and meaning connections) and how breakdowns in this system contribute to dyslexia.
Session 2: Causes of Dyslexia: What They Are (and What They Aren’t) - Wednesday 23rd September 2026 @ 7 pm
Differentiate between causes of dyslexia and common misconceptions
Participants will be able to identify multiple causes of reading difficulty (including but not limited to dyslexia) and distinguish evidence-based explanations from commonly misunderstood or unsupported beliefs.
Session 3: Dyslexia in the Classroom: Evidence-Based Instruction That Works - Wednesday 14th October 2026 @ 7 pm
Apply evidence-based instructional practices to support students with dyslexia
Participants will be able to recognize and implement key features of effective, research-based reading instruction that improve outcomes for students with dyslexia in classroom settings.
Bio of Presenter: Devin Kearns

Devin M. Kearns, Ph.D. is Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Early Literacy at North Carolina State University at Raleigh. Devin studies early reading including the cognitive and neurobiological basis of reading, science-based methods for improving reading skills, and multi-tiered support systems to better meet the needs of all students. He has published more than 70 papers in research journals like the Journal of Educational Psychology and teacher journals like The Reading Teacher. Devin frequently visits schools nationwide and helps them build better systems to maximize students’ reading success.
