Information about Relate
NCSE Relate is a comprehensive, practical resource for school staff that has been
designed by educators, for educators. It is intended to frame the skills and
knowledge that teachers and schools already have, recognises good practice in
place and supports school staff to build upon the next steps.
It provides professional learning, practical strategies and a range of new tools and
supports to support schools in nurturing the potential of every child, creating
environments for students to engage and participate in a meaningful way.
There are six elements of support which provide a pathway for supporting students.
- The Understanding Element,
- The Relationships Element,
- The Exploring Element,
- The Classroom Element,
- The Teaching Element and
- The Reflecting Element.
There are eight principles and these underpin all aspects of Relate.

Presenters info:
Susan Gavin is a B Ed in Education and Psychology graduate from Mary Immaculate
College and holds a Master’s degree in Education from Dublin City University. Susan
has worked predominantly in the mainstream classroom, but was most recently
leading the speech and language class in her school. She has worked as an
educational consultant on wellbeing programmes for Irish primary schools and has
also contributed to many teacher professional courses. Susan is currently on
secondment working as an advisor to the NCSE where she delivers teacher
continuous professional development courses and supports schools in Clare,
Limerick and Clare in the area of behaviour and wellbeing.
Emma Sweeney is a primary school teacher from Kerry with a background in
teaching in Autism Classes, ranging from Early Intervention to Senior Autism
Classes. Currently seconded to the National Council for Special Education (NCSE)
as an Advisor on both the Autism Team and the Behaviour for Wellbeing and
Inclusion Team. Throughout her time with the NCSE, she has acted as the
coordinator for the TEACCH trainings in Ireland, provided support to schools,
developed resources for teachers and delivered seminars. Most recently, Emma was
part of the design team and working group that developed the NCSE Relate
resource.
