What is Emotion Coaching?

Emotion Coaching is a relational, skills- based approach for adults to use during moments of heightened emotion and resulting behaviour to guide and teach children and young people about more effective responses.

Research has identified that children who are supported through this strategy are better able to control their impulses and delay gratification, self soothe when upset, have better attentional capacity and increased motivation, perform better academically and are better able to function in social relationships.

This school-friendly programme uses 4 core steps to help develop emotional resilience, empathy and problem solving skills within children and young people. It is also shown to positively impact adult wellbeing.

The course will cover:

  • Basic neuroscience of emotional regulation & the stress-response system
  • Background to emotion coaching, what it is & why we should use it
  • Adults’ emotional awareness & different styles of responding to emotions in children & young people
  • How to use the 4 steps of emotion coaching
  • Practical exercises & skill development activities
  • Practice, reflection, peer discussion & problem-solving
  • Overview of strategies that complement emotion coaching
  • Support in starting your emotion coaching journey

Qualifying as a Primary School Teacher in 2011, Lucy gained teaching experience in mainstream and special education settings in Ireland, Australia and the UK, before returning to university to study psychology in 2014. Graduating from UCD with a postgraduate degree in Psychology in 2016, Lucy proceeded to complete a Masters in Psychology from Kingston University London in 2017.

Throughout her studies, Lucy continued teaching in a range of schools and filled the remainder of her time in Assistant Psychologist roles that offered experiences working with trauma-impacted adults in the Irish prison system and NHS secure mental health services.

In recent years, Lucy has worked in senior leadership roles in a range of sector-leading therapeutic schools across London, within multidisciplinary teams of educators and clinicians. These schools catered for pupils whose complex social/emotional needs and trauma-based behavioural difficulties that led to their exclusion from mainstream education.

Lucy founded TINT Education in Spring 2022 upon returning to live in Ireland, with a mission to develop trauma-informed practice in Irish schools. She frequently develops and delivers training workshops and consults with school leadership teams on this topic, in both Ireland and the UK. Lucy has also recently embarked on an MA in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy, to broaden her skillset in applying therapeutic approaches to the classroom.
