23TRA015 Supporting Children with Literacy Difficulties as a Special Education Teacher

This course aims to explore supporting children with literacy difficulties as a SET .In particular, there will be a focus on these areas: vocabulary, spelling, fluency, comprehension, sight vocabulary, language, phonics and phonological awareness. Specific interventions to support children with reading difficulties will also be discussed such as Toe by Toe, Snip, Hornet, Alpha to Omega etc. We will explore the role of assistive technology and ICT in supporting children with literacy difficulties.
- Support pupils with SEN in relation to literacy in the following areas: language, vocabulary, spelling, fluency, comprehension, sight vocabulary, phonics and phonological awareness

Compare and contrast the efficacy of various literacy support programmes

Understand the role of assessment when supporting pupils struggling with literacy with a specific focus on supporting reading and writing skills

Bio of Presenters: Aoife and Aisling
Aoife and Aisling are teachers who completed the B.Ed in Education and Psychology in Mary I. They currently have 9 years teaching experience across a wide range of classes from Junior Infants to Sixth Class as well as in the Special Education setting. Both Aoife and Aisling completed a M.Ed in Special Educational Needs in Trinity College with a focus on reading difficulties. Aoife is an assistant principal and has had this position of management in her school for five years. Both teachers currently teach 5th class in their respective schools in Dublin and Cork.
