Meeting the Needs of Children with Mild General Learning Disability and Down Syndrome in the Mainstream Classroom with a focus on Language and Literacy.

This session is for Mainstream Teachers and Special Education Co-ordinators and Teachers as they work together with children with Mild GLD and Down Syndrome.  This session will have a particular focus on Language and Literacy.  The presentation will adopt a strengths’-based approach to addressing need in inclusive classrooms.  Margaret will present key characteristics of the children with Mild GLD and DS while highlighting that every child in your classrooms is an individual. An overview of the Student Support File/Plan will be offered.  Specific assessments in Language and Literacy, to identify particular, individual needs will be discussed. Key pedagogical teaching approaches, based on assessed need, will be presented with strategies that relate directly to teachers’ work with children in classrooms. 

Dr. Trevor O’ Brien is a faculty member of the Department of Educational Psychology, Inclusive and Special Education at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. Prior to joining the Department, he spent many years working as a classroom teacher and as a learning support/resource teacher. He teaches a range of topics at undergraduate and post-graduate level, and his research interests include general and specific learning disabilities, inclusive strategies and eliciting the voice of the child in education.
