Target Audience: Post-primary teachers of all subjects, including those working in SET

This PLN session will focus on the teaching of vocabulary in secondary schools. It will address practical strategies for ensuring student understanding of academic language in subjects such as English, History, Geography. It will be followed by a discussion of practice in the participants’ schools, facilitated by LAI PLN members.

Bio of Presenter: Alex Quigley

Alex Quigley is an experienced teacher, education writer, and leading voice in literacy and evidence-informed  practice. He is the author of several influential books, including Closing the Reading Gap and The Confident Teacher. With a background in secondary English teaching and leadership, he has worked extensively with schools to improve teaching and learning through research-informed approaches. Quigley is also a prominent contributor to professional development, supporting teachers in translating educational research into classroom practice. His work focuses particularly on literacy, teacher expertise, and improving outcomes for disadvantaged students across diverse educational contexts.
