26th September, 17th October, 28th November 2017

Prerequisite for Course Participation:

  • You have seen and used just the very basic functionality of Scratch.
  • You are familiar with setting up and saving a script/project.
  • You have at least an average knowledge of computing and have an interest in maths.
  • You are interested in incorporating Scratch in your numeracy teaching for at least 1 hour a week.

Software and Hardware Requirements:

Scratch is currently only supported on desktops and laptops running Windows. They are working on a version for tablets (Android and iOS (iPad)) and mobile devices. There are workarounds for ‘some’ tablets and some people have gotten versions working on iPads but it would be necessary for any interested teacher to confirm that the software can work on the hardware that it is intended to use with the pupils.

To get the benefits of the software and this course it is advised that interested teachers should ensure that their class have regular access, at least weekly, to a computer lab or room where there is a computer for at least every 2 pupils. (Scratch works very well with pair programming where 2 students sit at 1 computer, discussing and problem solving together while taking turns typing)

The software is completely free of charge and can be used either online (i.e. with an active internet connection) or offline (a version that can be downloaded and used without an active internet connection)

Dear Principal,

I hope you and your staff had a good summer break and a well-deserved rest.

As you are aware NEPS operates a system of planning work with schools at the beginning of each academic year. This year we are completing our planning process in two parts.

The first part will be a presentation delivered to groups of schools and will take place in the Tralee Education Centre. We are very aware that the educational context in which you are working is changing and this meeting will give information about how you can make the make the most effective use of your NEPS service.  We will provide information on NEPS model of service, offer some guidelines for prioritising pupils for NEPS involvement and outline the role of NEPS in the context of the new model of special education resourcing (TAM).

Each school is invited to send two nominees from senior management and/or teachers
with SEN responsibility.  The details for your school's group planning meeting are as follows:

Date:               Thursday September 28th
Venue:            Education Centre Tralee
Time:              11am - 1pm

Please confirm your attendance by September 21st by registering on The Tralee Education Centre website.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

PDST ‘Wellread National Award’ – Expression of Interest

Dear Principal,

Following the launch of the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) Wellread National Award in 2015,the PDST would like to invite schools (who are not already registered since 2015) to register for a possible award in October 2018 or thereafter.

The PDST Wellread National Award aims to promote the development of a reading culture in school communities towards supporting the personal and academic development of our young people. It involves all stakeholders including students, teachers, parents, Board of Management and the wider community in reading and associated activities.

We would like to invite teachers to attend a two hour Information Session taking place in Education Centres around the country. I would be grateful if you could bring this schedule to the attention of the relevant teachers in your school. This session will outline ways in which schools might explicitly foster and nurture a reading culture in their school, including exploring practical considerations concerning the reading environment and establishing reader networks.  This session will also consider ways in which schools might capture their ‘Wellread’ journey.  Further information can also be found on the PDST website.

For schools who are already on their Wellread journey you do not need to re-register.

Please feel free to contact us in Laois Education Centre on 057-8672400 extension 5 and speak to Margaret Mary Grant should you have any queries.

Kind regards,

Ciara O’Donnell

Revised Programmes for Stay Safe and Walk Tall

In-service seminars for Primary Schools

11th September 2017

Dear Principal

I hope that you and your staff are well as you all settle into the new year.  The Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) provides a range of continuing professional development supports in the area of Health and Wellbeing. A central component of this relates to the teaching and learning of the SPHE curriculum and related programmes Stay Safe and Walk Tall.

Both programmes have been recently revised and the PDST are therefore offering a full day training seminar on the revised programmes to two members of staff per school.

The Department of Education and Skills will provide substitute cover where required.

The purpose of the seminar is to:

  • familiarise the participants with the revised Stay Safe programme; the rationale, key messages, content, resources and methodologies,  with a view to enabling participants to support the whole school implementation of the revised programme
  • raise awareness of the revised Walk Tall programme and other DES approved SPHE resources

The seminars will be delivered this term on the date(s) below. Two staff members are invited to attend. In order to book a place on this seminar, please follow the booking procedure below:
