The Word Study approach to the teaching and learning of spelling.
These two workshops, which will include hands on practical activities, will familiarise participants with the latest research-based approaches to the teaching, learning and assessment of spelling. The content of the workshops will be relevant to teachers working at every level in primary school (including Gaelscoileanna) as well as support teachers in Secondary School.
The workshops will include diagnostic analysis of student free writing samples and strategies will be recommended to address identified needs.
The facility to submit questions in advance will ensure that these workshops are relevant to the needs of participants.
Eoin Shanahan has taught at every level in Primary school over a period of almost forty years. Prior to his retirement, he spent a number of years as an advisor with the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) where he continues as an Associate. Eoin has spent many years researching and supporting schools in the teaching, learning and assessment of spelling. He has done some pioneering work in the areas of Phonological and Phonemic Awareness, as evidenced in his seminal work 'Towards an Inventory of the Phoneme-Grapheme Units of Standard Irish English', published in Voices of Educators in 21st Century Ireland (Hibernia College, 2018).
This is a twin workshop which will take place on two consecutive evenings Tuesday the 12th and Wednesday the 13th of November from 5pm to 7pm.
