Phonological awareness is a key predictor of later reading success and forms the foundation for literacy development. This session explores the progression of skills such as listening, rhyming, syllables, and sound awareness, grounded in research on early language acquisition. Teachers will gain practical ideas for embedding playful, oral language-rich activities into their daily practice. The webinar emphasises the importance of strong foundations before formal phonics instruction, ensuring children develop the auditory skills needed to become confident and capable readers and writers.

Lorraine is an experienced primary school teacher and Deputy Principal, and the creator of Instagram page All Things Primary Ireland, where she shares practical, engaging ideas to support teaching and learning in the primary classroom. With a Master’s in Early Years Education and a strong interest in literacy, play-based learning, and effective classroom practice, Lorraine is passionate about supporting teachers at all stages of their careers.
