21TRA116 The Jigsaw Method: an inclusive and engaging technique for online teaching

Sustaining students’ interest during emergency remote teaching is a challenge for teachers of all subjects at all levels.  Similarly, it can be more difficult than usual to ensure that all students can participate equally.

Jigsaw is a method which was originally devised for language teaching but has been used to great effect by teachers of all subjects.  Using Jigsaw:

  • Students have an authentic purpose for reading, speaking and listening
  • Communication and problem-solving within the group are improved
  • Students learn independent research skills appropriate to their own abilities
  • Students with literacy difficulties can participate on an equal footing using appropriate technology
  • English language learners are supported to participate equally
  • Subject matter is internalised
  • Students are actively engaged and motivated

Jigsaw works well in an online classroom and can provide an effective and enjoyable solution to some of the difficulties of online learning.

In this workshop, participants will experience an online jigsaw learning activity and discuss how to make the method work best in their own class.

Who should attend?

Subject teachers (all subjects), SEN teachers, language support teachers

This workshop is provided by Munster Technological University, Kerry Campus, through the SOAR project for access to higher education
