FREE HSA Online Summer Course for Teachers - Health and Safety in Your School
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) will run the online Summer course for primary teachers once again in 2011. This online course introduces teachers and Principals to the basic principles of managing safety and health in schools including learning about key concepts such as hazard identification and risk assessment. The course content also includes end of lesson assessments and an offline assignment.
This course is recognised by the Department of Education and Skills for EPV purposes.
This year's course dates are as follows:
- Course 1 - Friday 1st July to Friday 15th July
- Course 2 - Monday 18th July to Friday 29th July
- Course 3 - Tuesday 2nd August to Friday12th August
- Course 4 - Monday 15th August to Friday 26th August

Overview of Course Content:
- Brief overview of legal obligations
- Two key legal terms – reasonably practicable / competence
- Responsibilities and duties
- The safety statement
- Understanding hazards, risks and controls
- Risk assessment
- General principles of preventing accidents
- Emergency planning
- Accident reporting
- Managing safety and health
An online forum facilitated by the Authority's Education team will allow participants to openly discuss and exchange views with each other on matters raised on the course.
For this online course you will need:
- Internet access via broadband
- Adobe Flash player (version 9 or above) installed
- This course contains audio so speakers are required
- You will be required to complete assessments in Microsoft Word Format which will then be uploaded to the online environment. Please ensure that you are comfortable with file management as this is a requirement for this course
- The interactive courseware is 100 minutes (1 hour 40 minutes) in duration. The reading and assignments are approximately 20 hours. Please ensure you have enough time available to complete this before the close of the course.
